Progress reports in the WPs

WP1.

There is a chance for having to delay the submission of D1.5 due to staffing issues at URV, but it is being addressed. A delay of up to three months is foreseen. The Quality Control verification work is time consuming but the delay is not expected to affect later work or the homogenisation Deliverable D1.6 since this work is more automated.

In addition there will be about several dozen millions of already digitised data collected from NMS:s in Catalonia, Norway and Sweden, for insertion into international data bases and MARS in particular.

The D1.10 and 1.12 are being finalised right now.

WP2.

The work on the cloud analysis at SMHI is still continuing and they are working on tuning the scientific algorithms with respect to resolution of the analysis boxes and superobs. It seems that one doesn't benefit from as high resolution as 5 km and it is also very costly. Then one would also like to have the new CM-SAF cloudmask METEOSAT data set for the whole period, which is not yet there. The work is still delayed but should be ready at the end of the summer. There are no major dependencies of the data in UERRA since WP3 is focussing on radiation data at the surface.

The production at SMHI for the 3-dimensional RA is going well and 7 parallel streams are being run. There is a lot of data and the availability of MARS archiving is badly needed. A report of the results and of the work shall be made in the summer for the D 2.6.

The downscaling at MF is being completed soon but the station data analysis won't start until July. The 5 years of ensemble will be completed in September and it means a delay of D 2.9 of a couple of months.

The nudging ensemble RA at University of Bonn is ongoing but there are frequent technical problems with the observation data from MARS. It requires manual intervention and slows the process down so the 5 years will take longer to run.

The Met Office system is working well and has been run for a month to a month and a half test periods.

It is planned to run with and without satellite data for one month each year to assess the impact. The Ensemble DA is running and performs well with perturbed observations and model errors. The new ERA-5 ensemble RA have been tested against ERA-Interim on the boundaries and the effect seems to be small and the quality is not depending on the ERA-5 ensemble (which would not be ready for the whole period in time anyway (to be finished in 2017).

The question of which year(s) to start with for the inter-comparison in WP3 was discussed. 2008/2009 have been discussed before and it seems that 2008 is the best choice since e.g. the Alpine data set exists until that year. Andrea will investigate and come back with a recommendation. Especially for Univ of Bonn it will not be possible to do more than one year in time.

Action: Andrea will come back with a priority of which year (2008 or 2009) to run first.

WP3

WP3 is working with evaluation of RA s against shortwave radiation at the surface as measured by satellite instruments. They are working with Cristian's code and are experimenting with wavelet transforms to average and look at different scales. At the moment it is from COSMO reanalyses but they really need the UERRA data by end of June to be able to evaluate the UERRA RA s. There is a D 3.5 assessment due in the autumn.

The WP is really depending on the MARS archives to get the data and to have a unified interface. To get the data in some “back-up” solution like NetCDF, is probably not helpful and would mean a lot of extra work and would be against the plans in the Project.

WP4

The MARS work at ECMWF is now very critical for the UERRA RA as SMHI is in production and the others are or are soon going into that phase. A UERRA first archiving of SMHI HARMONIE data will be made in the coming week even if not complete. Scripts will be further developed and with a new grib-api version made available for the WP2 producers to employ and adapt. The interface to the output files of the models needs to be adapted or made by the individual producers and each producer will need to spend significant time and effort to get the data into MARS.

The ESGF system is not yet working at KNMI but will be put up within a month. Due to the urgency and efforts of the MARS work and at least in UERRA less priority and with only a limited data set in the ESGF service, 5 person months will be transferred from KNMI to ECMWF (approximately 5).

WP7

One EU-brief has been delivered now, D 7.3. in the form of a one-page publication about UERRA in the Magazine “Parliament” with a special Space and Copernicus issue, It is distributed to all MEPs and to a wide range of senior EU officials. It was done by SMHI (Per) in an effort to disseminate information about Regional Reanalyses and UERRA. This part of WP7 is now done by SMHI instead of KNMI (and SMHI) so 2 person-months will be transferred to SMHI. This outreach and dissemination is anyway close to and part of the Coordinator's job.

KNMI will now participate in and disseminate material at an African Workshop in Angola 28 November to 9 December, arranged in the context of GFCS end ETCCDI.

WP8

Andrea attended an interesting C2SM in Zürich where a long list of user requirements emerged and which will be useful for UERRA. It is for the purpose of Climate Change (Systems) modelling.

WP9

The contacts through tele conferences between the 5 projects will resume. The common web page is satisfactory and has been delivered.

Deliverables' status

D 1.5 Dare quality control. It will be delayed by 2-3 months (from M30).

D 1.10 (UEA) and 12 (KNMI) (Gridding improvements and resolution enhancement) (M24). Richard informed that they will be completed first week in May (now)

D 1.11 Gridding resolution assessments. Due M30 and is expected to be done in the summer (for July).

D 2.6 HARMONIE initial production. M30. Diagnostics will be carried out for some of the data and a report written.

D 2.9 MESCAN ensemble. M30. It will be ready in September.

D 2.10 MESAN cloud analysis. M24. Delayed some months into or the end of summer.

D 7.3 – M18. EU brief. An article about UERRA in the “Parliament” was included and reaches a wide audience of MEPs and EU officials.

D 7.9. African Workshop. Delayed but will be done in connection with other activities in the late autumn.

D 9.2 – Web portal : Common web page. The common web page under clipc.eu has been submitted..
